Last Friday, at the stroke of 11 in the morning, the air in Diphu was dense with tension as the Karbi Students’ Association (KSA) Inglongpho group assembled for a press conference. The meeting was an urgent response to a violent incident that took place in the West Karbi Anglong district, where members of the KSA were brutally assaulted.

The West Karbi Anglong district, notably in the areas of Kheroni Village Gazing Reserve and the Professional Gazing Reserve, has become a hotspot for conflict. Local residents have been embroiled in a contentious dispute over land rights, specifically the demand for land pattas (official land documents). The situation escalated into a confrontation that has reverberated across the hills, triggering widespread reactions.
The tension reached a boiling point on Thursday evening when a group of miscreants launched a vicious attack on KSA members, inflicting serious injuries. The KSA Inglongpho group, in no uncertain terms, organized the press conference to vehemently protest this act of violence and issue a stern condemnation.
The incident has not only sent shockwaves through the local community but also raised significant concerns about the safety and security of individuals advocating for their rights. The KSA, a prominent student organization, has been at the forefront of advocating for the rights of the indigenous people of Karbi Anglong. The attack on its members is seen as an attack on the very principles of justice and equity.
In a powerful display of solidarity, the KSA Inglongpho group’s press conference was more than just a forum for airing grievances; it was a rallying cry for justice. The organization called on authorities to take swift and decisive action against the perpetrators and to ensure that such incidents are not repeated.
