In the Kheroni region of the West Karbi Anglong district, as tranquility returns to the two agitated hill districts centered around the residents of VGR and PGR lands, the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council has issued a notice for the eviction of those residing on the disputed lands in accordance with the promises made during an all-party meeting. Furthermore, ten government-appointed village headmen have been dismissed for granting permission to reside on these lands.
For many years, people from the Bihari community had been occupying this land and establishing settlements. The regional political party ASDC and its affiliated organizations protested against this encroachment by carrying out democratic movements. On February 15, during a significant clash on Kheroni Chariali, several student leaders were seriously injured as a result. Following this incident, both hill districts became highly agitated. On February 20, the council held discussions with all political parties and social organizations of the district and decided to carry out evictions within 30 days from the land.
As part of their duties, the Principal Secretary of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council suspended ten government-appointed village heads (Gaonburahs) from both the West Karbi Anglong Dengaon revenue circle and the Phuloni revenue circle, based on the reports submitted by the officials of these areas.
Additionally, the Council has issued a notice for all residents living on PGR-VGR land to vacate their premises immediately. Following these stringent measures by the Council, there is now an observable state of chaos across the extensive region of Kheroni in West Karbi Anglong. According to information received, shops and businesses established on the disputed land remain closed, and a noticeable silence has descended across the entire area.
“Sarkari Gaonburas (SGBs) were fired with immediate effect for failing to notify massive encroachment on PGR/VGR land in Kheroni under Donkamukam Revenue Circle and Phuloni Circle, as follows:
