ASSAM TIMES POST
Guwahati : Opposition Congress MLAs came wearing garland of onions around their neck to the Assam Assembly on Friday at the entrance of the House to protest against price rise of the vegetable. The legislators arrived at the entrance of the House wearing necklace of onions to register their protest against the price rise asserting they will continue to do so till the state government takes measures to control the price. They, however, did not wear the onion garlands inside the House. Onion is selling in the state at Rs 100 and more per kg.
AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam also protested with an onion garland stating he was looking to put it on “those political leaders who had protested earlier when onion price had risen to Rs 60” making an oblique reference to some BJP members who did so during the previous government.
Talking to waiting reporters at the entrance of the House, Islam demanded government sell onions at controlled price through the fair price shops to give relief to the people from the spiralling price rise. Food Supply Minister Phani Bhusan Chowdhury told the journalists that the price rise was country wide and Assam being a consuming state felt it’s brunt.
