Guwahati: Consumer rights body Consumer’s legal protection forum, Assam and Consumer voice, New Delhi welcome Assam government’s decision of prohibited the manufacture, distribution, sale, transportation, display of gutkha and pan masala and chewing material containing tobacco and nicotine in the state. The two organization reacted positively to the government’s notification for supporting the initiative of banning chewing gutkha and pan masala. In their statement, they thanked the Assam government for their efforts in tobacco control intervention to save millions of lives. They stated that this curb will help citizens in overcoming cancer and other dreaded diseases. Ajoy Hazarika, Secretary of CLPF says, “We welcome the decision which is much needed for the people of Assam. The younger generation who were targeted by companies now be saved from this menace.” Ashim Sanyal, COO of Consumer voice emphatically stated that now people of Assam can lead a more healthy and productive life as both tobacco and nicotine products will be out of bounds for the populace.
