GUWAHATI : An elephant has gone on rampage in Assam’s Goalpara district, trampling five people to death , forest officials said.
The elephant, which has frequently created terror in different parts of the district, has been on a rampage since yesterday killing a 70-year old man and injuring a child in Bataitari village of the district. Another eleven-year old was killed in Santipurnigam yesterday evening while three women were killed in Paschim Matia, Hidhabari and Hahsorabri villages since last night.
Irate people blocked roads at different places of the district demanding that the forest department take immediate measure to tranquilise and capture the elephant.The current location of the elephant is inside Koinakuchi forest and efforts are on by forest department personnel to tranquilise the elephant. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs four lakh each to the next of kin of those killed in the attack. The Goalpara forest division has written to the higher.
