Assam Police on August 1 seized a large consignment of narcotics — including 50,000 Yaba tablets and heroin — from a vehicle in Amingaon and arrested three men from Manipur, officials said. The operation is being hailed as a significant blow to drug trafficking into Lower Assam districts.
Acting on specific intelligence, officers intercepted a Tata Nexon (registration AS 11-AA-6800) in Amingaon in Kamrup district. The operation was led by Kalyan Kumar Pathak, Additional Superintendent of Police (Headquarters), Kamrup.
The three arrested were identified as Kh Tabish, 24, and Thekcham Avinash Singh, 41, both from Thoubal district, and Nongmaithem Biswajit, 38, of Imphal West district. During a detailed search of the vehicle, police recovered 50,000 Yaba tablets containing methamphetamine, weighing about 5 kg without packaging, reportedly hidden in specially made secret compartments.
Police also found five soap boxes containing heroin, with an estimated weight of approximately 67.5 grams without packaging. Officials said the narcotics have a street value of around Rs 12.5 crore, while the CID has valued the contraband at roughly Rs 7.5 crore.
Legal action has been initiated against the three accused, and further investigation is under way to trace the source and intended destination of the consignment. Authorities said the seizure underscores Assam Police’s ongoing crackdown on drug networks and efforts to curb narcotics movement into the region.
