
Hareswar Deka, a man in his mid-30s, died after an alleged late-night assault by a group of transgender individuals in the Bhootnath area of Guwahati on the night of Sunday, July 12, 2026. Passersby found Deka unconscious and bleeding near a culvert; he was rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) but succumbed to his injuries at around 6:00 AM on Monday, July 13, 2026.

Initial reports say the incident began as a confrontation that broke out around midnight on July 12. Police have opened an investigation and are working to trace those involved. An official from Bharalumukh Police Station told GPlus, “the exact number of people involved is not known yet but the offenders will soon be apprehended.”
Before he died at GMCH, Deka-identified in some reports as Hareshwar Deka-allegedly gave authorities important information about the incident. He is reported to be a father of two. No arrests have been confirmed publicly so far.
Locals have pressed police for swift action and raised questions about whether the neighbourhood’s CCTV cameras were functioning during the incident, saying any footage could be crucial to the probe. Residents have expressed anger over the attack and are calling for tougher measures to improve security in the area.
Police sources say the investigation is ongoing and that they are examining available leads, including witness statements and any potential CCTV recordings, to establish the sequence of events and identify suspects.
