In a significant move, five officers from the Bordumsa Police Station in Tinsukia district were suspended on Sunday following allegations of custodial assault. The action comes in the wake of an incident involving a local man who reportedly clashed with police during Friday’s panchayat election polling. Authorities confirmed that the man was taken into custody and allegedly assaulted the following evening.

Sources indicate that the man was detained by order of Officer-in-Charge (OC) Biswajit Saharia, who has since been transferred to the reserve line. Reports suggest that while in custody, the detainee suffered severe physical mistreatment, igniting widespread public outrage and protests in the area. Local residents are demanding accountability and justice from the police force.
In light of the uproar, the Assam Police have taken decisive action. Two sub-inspectors and three constables were suspended immediately and instructed to report to the district headquarters. Superintendent of Police Gaurav Abhijit Dilip has mandated a formal inquiry into the incident to ascertain the facts surrounding the alleged assault.
Dinesh Pratap Singh Rathode, the Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Margherita, will lead the investigation. He has been directed to submit a comprehensive report within 48 hours to facilitate appropriate further action. This swift move underscores the police department’s commitment to addressing misconduct and restoring public trust.
The incident has raised serious questions about police conduct during elections and the treatment of individuals in custody. As tensions in the community escalate, all eyes are on the inquiry results and the measures that will follow to ensure justice is served.
The Assam Police’s actions reflect an ongoing effort to enhance accountability and transparency within the force. As investigations proceed, it remains crucial for law enforcement to uphold the rights of citizens while adhering to ethical standards. The unfolding situation is a stark reminder of the critical need for reforms in the policing system to prevent future occurrences of custodial violence and ensure public safety.
