Chandra Kamal Gogoi, a luminary in the world of fine arts and a direct descendant of Assam’s legendary Ahom hero Lachit Borphukan, passed away on Tuesday morning at the age of 78. Gogoi succumbed to age-related illness while under treatment at Lakhimpur Medical College Hospital.

A graduate of the prestigious Shanti Niketan in West Bengal, Gogoi was renowned for his exceptional artistic talent. His education and innate skills earned him a respected status within the art community. He was not only celebrated for his own artistic contributions but also for his role in nurturing future artists. Gogoi founded Kala Niketan, a fine arts school in Lakhimpur, where he inspired a new generation of talent.
Moreover, Gogoi’s creativity extended to designing postal stamps for the Department of Posts, adding another dimension to his artistic legacy. His contributions were deeply intertwined with Assam’s cultural heritage, rooted in his illustrious lineage as a descendant of Lachit Borphukan, the revered Ahom general known for his victory against the Mughals in the Battle of Saraighat.
Gogoi’s dedication to the arts was notably recognized by former President APJ Abdul Kalam, who personally acknowledged Gogoi’s commitment during a hunger strike protesting the closure of a prominent art and culture institute. In appreciation, President Kalam gifted him a Luna moped, a treasured symbol of recognition.
In 2022, Gogoi’s lifetime achievements in art were honored with the Bishnu Prasad Rabha Award, solidifying his status as one of Assam’s most esteemed artists.
Chandra Kamal Gogoi’s passing signifies the end of an era. His legacy, marked by artistic brilliance and a profound connection to Assam’s rich history, will continue to inspire future generations of artists.
