In an unexpected and highly successful operation, the Assam Police apprehended five individuals from the Karbi Anglong district, close to the Assam-Nagaland border. The operation led to the seizure of illegal firearms along with live ammunition. The action was carried out based on specific classified information regarding the smuggling of contraband drugs.
The Karbi Anglong district, particularly the Khatkhati police station area, has been recognized as a transit point for illicit drug trafficking from Myanmar. However, in this instance, the police, instead of finding drugs, discovered lethal weapons and live ammunition.
The tip-off received by the Khatkhati police station led to the establishment of a blockade and ambush at the Kaliram Basti near the railway bridge in the evening hours of Thursday. The police intercepted a Bolero vehicle with the registration number NL-07 CB-8179.
Upon inspecting the vehicle, instead of the anticipated drugs, the police discovered a 9 mm Beretta pistol, a magazine, and 43 live rounds. This significant haul of illegal arms was a surprise to the police, who were initially looking for drug substances.
Five individuals were arrested on the spot. They were identified as Thonga Wangcha (39) of Dimapur, Alto Chisabi (40), Hekiho Jimomi(45), Khukivi Aye (32), and Chattar Ali from Marigaon district of Lahorighat.
The arrested individuals are currently under police custody, and further investigation is ongoing. The Assam Police are hopeful that this arrest might lead to more significant links related to the illegal arms and drug trade in the region.
According to sources from the Khatkhati Police, the operation was conducted under the supervision of Bokajan Sub-Division Police Officer Rustamraj Brahma. The team included Officer Romen Bardoloi from Khatkhati Police Station, Probationary Deputy Superintendent of Police Martin Deori, Assistant Inspector Swamadhan Swargiary of 20 BN CRPF, and the third command battalion, along with other station staff.
This operation is a significant example of the diligent work of the Assam Police in cracking down on illegal activities and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
The successful operation and seizure of illegal arms have sent a stern message to those involved in such illicit activities and have further reinforced the commitment of the Assam Police towards maintaining law and order in the region.
