A person alleged to have raped two minor girls was shot at and injured by the police while he had attempted to escape from custody in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, police said on Tuesday.
The 54-year old accused, who was absconding since he had allegedly raped two sisters, was nabbed on Monday and was being brought to Kheroni police station when he attempted to escape from police custody.
The police opened fire and he was injured in his left leg, following which he was admitted to the Diphu Medical College and Hospital.
The accused had allegedly raped a eight-year old minor girl on March 10 and subsequently her five-year old sister on March 18.
The mother of the two girls with the support of the local community had filed a complaint at the Kheroni police station.
A case has been registered against the accused under section 376(2) (F) for rape to be read with certain sections of the POCSO Act.
Assam has witnessed a spurt in police encounters since Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assumed office on May 10 last year, with 35 people killed and at least 90 injured in such incidents since then.
