Today, a violent clash occurred in the Tapat area along the Assam-Meghalaya border in West Karbi Anglong, centered around rice harvesting between the Khasi community and local residents of Assam.
As a result of this conflict, a 44-year-old man from Assam, identified as Oriwel Timung, was killed. According to reports, the Khasi people of Meghalaya have long claimed this land in Assam as their own, leading to periodic tensions in the area over the years. They have been entering Assam to cultivate rice and other agricultural products.
Recently, there had been an escalating situation regarding the harvesting of rice in the area, despite a peace meeting held on October 6 to address the issue, during which both parties agreed not to harvest rice without mutual consent. However, todayâs events escalated into a face-off over the rice harvesting. Some locals have accused the Khasi of attacking Assam residents with sharp weapons and gunfire, leading to the death of an individual from Assam.
Meanwhile, police from both sides present at the scene attempted to control the situation by using tear gas. The atmosphere remains tense across the entire region. Reports indicate that the Assam police have dispatched a large contingent to the site, and high-ranking officials are also heading there. Notably, months ago, the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council had planted several red sandalwood saplings in this border area, which were then cut down by Khasi miscreants, contributing to the unrest.
Since then, tensions have persisted in the region. Although the governments of Assam and Meghalaya have engaged in multiple discussions to resolve the border dispute in West Karbi Anglong, a permanent solution has yet to be achieved.
