On Saturday, November 16, Imphal in Manipur witnessed significant protests at the historic Khwairamband Ima Keithel, following the kidnapping and brutal killing of six individuals, including children, in Jiribam. Recognized as Asia’s largest all-women market, this venue became the focal point for expressing public outrage and grief.

Vendors and local residents gathered to demand justice, mourning the loss of the victims and voicing their anguish over the tragic incident that has reverberated across the state. The protestors are particularly frustrated by the recent decision to re-impose the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in six police jurisdictions. The act, often criticized for its stringent measures, is seen by many as exacerbating public discontent and fear, rather than ensuring safety and security.
The protests reflect the deep-seated anxieties and demand for action among Manipur’s populace, spotlighting the broader issues of safety and governance in the region.
