Two early morning earthquakes jolted parts of Northeast India on Friday, as reported by the National Centre of Seismology (NCS). The first tremor, with a magnitude of 3.6, struck Ukhrul district in Manipur at 7:02 am IST.

The epicenter was pinpointed at a depth of 30 kilometers at latitude 25.04 N and longitude 94.20 E. Shortly after, at 7:10 am IST, a second quake occurred in Cooch Behar, West Bengal, registering a magnitude of 3.3. This tremor was shallower, originating 5 kilometers below the surface at latitude 26.28 N and longitude 89.13 E.
Fortunately, no immediate reports of damage or casualties have emerged from either of the affected areas. Both regions are located within a seismically active zone, prompting ongoing vigilance by seismologists who continue to closely monitor for any further seismic activity.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed about safety measures and updates from local authorities, as the region’s geophysical dynamics remain unpredictable.
The occurrence of these moderate-intensity quakes highlights the importance of preparedness in areas prone to seismic events, underlining the necessity for ongoing research and strengthened infrastructure to mitigate potential risks.
