
The Manipuri short film, “Lembi Leima,” continues to garner accolades, with lead actress Bala Hijam Nigthoujam recently winning the Best Actress award at the 4th Empty Space International Short Film Festival 2024. This adds to the film’s impressive tally of 45 awards from various global film festivals.

Directed by Mayank Pratap Singh and produced by Cicada Film Production and RJ Star Production, the film also stars Bijou Thaangjam, Naveen Jagbir Sandhu, Khonykar Khuraijam, and Niranjoy Luwangcha.
“Lembi Leima’s” continued success underlines Bala Hijam’s exceptional talent and its impact on the Manipuri film industry. The festival, held on September 14 and 15, applauded her outstanding performance. Previously, the film won the Best Film (Gold) at the Northeast Film Festival, Mumbai 2023, further snagging awards for Best Indian Short Film, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor at the Sitannavasal International Film Festival 2022.
Expressing her gratitude, Bala Hijam highlighted the film’s significant reception and its role in spotlighting the Manipuri film industry. Besides “Lembi Leima,” Bala’s latest performance in “Boong,” directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, premiered on September 5 at the Toronto International Film Festival, where her portrayal of Mandakini received rave reviews.
These achievements solidify Bala Hijam Ningthoujam’s reputation as a leading talent in Manipuri cinema. Her relentless pursuit of excellence continues to set new industry standards.
