Student leader Shankar Jyoti Baruah announced on social media on September 12 that he is stepping down from his role as the General Secretary of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU). Baruah clarified that his decision was made voluntarily and without any external pressure. He expressed gratitude for the support he received during his tenure and mentioned that the truth behind the situation will come to light in court.
This announcement follows serious allegations made by a student, who accused Baruah of emotional and physical abuse, deceit with false marriage promises, and threats to her life. The scandal has prompted extensive discussions and debates within AASU. In an attempt to address the issue squarely, the union has allowed Baruah to step down voluntarily.
Baruah has acknowledged a past relationship with the student but asserted that it ended six months ago. He plans to formally submit his resignation to the central committee soon.
