Abhijit Dey, an English teacher at a government higher secondary school, also provided private tuition, which is where the alleged molestations occurred. The ordeal came to light when the student disclosed to her parents that Dey had molested her on multiple occasions. On August 8, following the studentâs allegations, the enraged parents and local community apprehended Dey and subjected him to a brutal attack before handing him over to the police.
Despite being in critical condition, Dey was not immediately rushed to a medical facility, raising serious concerns about police negligence. Eventually, a medical examination was carried out, but during his court appearance, Deyâs health severely deteriorated; he collapsed and started vomiting blood. He was then transferred to Gomati District Hospital and later referred to GB Pant Hospital in Agartala, where he died.
The local community and political leaders condemned the incident, criticizing both police and medical personnel for their alleged negligence. The Additional Superintendent of Police of Gomati District, Souvik Dey, confirmed that two cases have been registeredâone for the lynching and another concerning the molestation charges. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have promised swift action against all those involved.
Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy visited Deyâs residence to assure his wife that stringent measures would be taken against the perpetrators. Additionally, a delegation from the Gomati District Congress, led by President Titan Paul, met with the grieving family, accusing the police and on-duty doctors of neglect that led to Deyâs death, and demanding their immediate arrest.
The incident has profoundly shocked the local community, stirring up calls for justice and better protection mechanisms against mob violence.
