Guwahati : A “Save Tree–Save Riverfront – Construct Bridge – Campaign”was held on Sunday with a Human Chain Programme at Sankardev Park in Machkhowa area of Guwahati to demand redesigning of the proposed bridge over Brahmaputra between North Guwahati and Bharalumukh here to save the trees and two parks there.
People from all walks of life, including children and senior citizens, formed a long human chain to demand the proposed bridge behind Sonaram School be redesigned in such a way that existing Sankardev Park, Azan Pir Park, the Bharalu basin and Brahmaputra riverfront from Bharalumukh to Kalipur could be saved with its large number of trees.
One of the participants in the campaign carrying a placard stating ‘save the environment’ said redesigning will not obstruct the speedy construction of the proposed bridge.
The Government may also appoint a technical committee with stakeholders from different fields to bring out the possible solution, one of the participants said.
An octogenarian citizen as part of the human chain accused the government of wanting to cut down the over 300 valuable over 50 years old tress in the area for the bridge destroying the vital green cover there on the riverfront.
Another elderly person of the locality said the government could have consulted the people of the area before preparing the detailed project report (DPR) on saving the trees there to construct the bridge.
