Despite the assurances given by the central government, the project has faced substantial delays primarily due to funding allocation issues. Dr. Ronghang’s memorandum highlights that abandoning the airport project is not an option, given its critical importance for enhancing air connectivity in the region.
To facilitate the development of this vital infrastructure, the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council has proposed an alternative site for the airport at Kheroni. This location is strategically positioned to better serve not just Karbi Anglong, but also adjacent districts such as Hojai, Nagaon, North Cachar Hills, and West Karbi Anglong. By selecting Kheroni as the new site, the council aims to make the project more commercially viable and improve connectivity for a larger population.
Dr. Ronghang and his team believe that this proactive approach will not only fulfill the promises made in the MoS but also stimulate economic growth in the region by making air travel more accessible. They are calling on the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Government of Assam to take decisive steps to advance this long-awaited project, which has the potential to transform the region’s transportation landscape.
The memorandum was submitted with the support of notable leaders, including Shri Amarsing Tisso,MP, and MLA Darsing Ronghang, alongside various executive members of the council such as Mr. Lunsing Teron, Surjya Rongphar, and Dr. Mongve Rongpi. Other dignitaries, including Dr. Jayanta Rongpi, Former MP and CEM, Dr. Dharamsing Teron, Ex MLA and Director of the Centre for Karbi Studies, and Mr. Elwin Teron, Former EM, also expressed their solidarity in this critical endeavor.
