In a harrowing incident that has sent shockwaves through the local community, 15 workers became trapped inside a coal mine in Assam on Monday after a sudden influx of water flooded the site. The incident took place at the Assam Coal Quarry, situated in the 3 Kilo area of Umrangso, within the Dima Hasao district. This event has raised concerns over the safety protocols and infrastructure in place within the region’s coal mining operations.

Authorities report that water rushed into the mine, creating a perilous situation for the workers who were on-site at the time. Mayank Kumar Jha, Superintendent of Police (SP) for Dima Hasao, confirmed to a media that multiple laborers are feared to be trapped, although he refrained from providing an exact figure at this time. Eyewitness accounts and initial assessments suggest that the flooding occurred unexpectedly, leaving the workers unable to escape the dangerous conditions.
In response to the crisis, rescue operations were launched immediately. Teams consisting of local authorities, emergency responders, and mining experts are working tirelessly to locate and free the trapped workers. The rescue efforts are being coordinated with the utmost urgency, as every passing moment raises the stakes for those still underground. Heavy machinery is reportedly being deployed to assist in the extraction process, while divers are also on standby should the situation require their expertise.
