The Assam State Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has initiated a suo motu investigation into the unfortunate death of Congress member Advocate Mridul Islam. Islam died during the “Raj Bhavan Chalo” protest organized by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) in Guwahati on December 19, 2024. This protest forms part of a larger nationwide movement addressing key issues such as the deployment of smart meters, alleged corruption ties with the Adani Group, the ongoing crisis in Manipur, and the controversial “One Nation, One Election” Bill.
The protest drew thousands of Congress supporters. Key figures present included APCC Chief Bhupen Borah, Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia, Working President Jakir Hussain Sikdar, and senior leader Ripun Bora. As the situation escalated, law enforcement deployed tear gas to disperse the crowds, leading to reports of adverse health effects among participants, including prominent Congress leaders.

The AHRC’s involvement underscores the gravity of the incident, amid growing concerns over protest management and the subsequent use of force. This development highlights the contentious atmosphere surrounding the outlined issues, reflecting widespread discontent and the demand for government accountability.
This unfortunate event not only spotlights the extent of dissatisfaction among the populace but also raises pertinent discussions about the balance between maintaining public order and respecting the rights of individuals during protests. The AHRC’s proactive stance suggests the possibility of further investigations into the conduct of law enforcement during the protest, marking a significant chapter in Assam’s political landscape as citizens and leaders alike seek explanations and justice in the aftermath of this tragic occurrence.
