The Save Dighalipukhuri Forum has expressed gratitude to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for assuring that no trees will be cut for the contentious flyover project in Guwahati. This comes after the Chief Minister’s commitment to maintaining the area’s greenery, a move welcomed by the Forum.
In their official statement, dated October 30, the Forum reaffirmed its dedication to sustainable development, emphasizing that their protest is not against progress but rather against compromising Dighalipukhuri’s environmental and cultural heritage. They are open to supporting development initiatives that honor the unique character of the region.
The Forum has urged the government to explore alternative solutions to the flyover plan and called for a complete halt to construction until these options are evaluated. They advocate for inclusive decision-making, encouraging public involvement in discussions concerning the project. Despite the Public Works Department being asked to assess alternative solutions, reports suggest construction persists, worrying the Forum about ongoing activities in the area.
The movement, gaining traction among nature enthusiasts, youth, and environmental advocates, has seen nightly vigils at Dighalipukhuri over the past five days. These events underscore the site’s place in Guwahati’s historical and intellectual legacy, which many fear is threatened by the proposed overpass.
Beyond Dighalipukhuri, the Forum highlighted concerns over tree-felling in Bharalumukh and Six Mile and pressed for a transparent environmental impact assessment (EIA) process. They argued for state-level screening of public infrastructure projects, demanding clarity and justification shared with the public if an EIA is not undertaken.
Looking ahead, the Save Dighalipukhuri Forum remains committed to advocating for public engagement in urban development, with a focus on environmental and cultural conservation. Although night vigils will pause to allow volunteer regrouping, the Forum continues to rally support across Guwahati, ensuring its advocacy efforts persist.
