The regional political party ASDC has once again become vocal about the demand for autonomy. Today, a demonstration was held in Diphu demanding an autonomous state. The protest was organized near the entrance of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council. Over a hundred officials displayed placards and raised various slogans to demand self-governance. The party’s president, Chandrakanta Terang, stated to the media that in 1969, the constitution provided for the formation of an autonomous state encompassing the three hill districts.

This is our constitutional right. We are not demanding the division of Assam but are seeking the highest level of autonomy within Assam itself. During the time of the Lok Sabha elections, Assam’s Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma assured us that he would consider this matter with importance. It has now been 5-6 months since the Lok Sabha elections concluded. Therefore, to remind him of our demand and his promise, we have sent a memorandum containing our demand for autonomy along with 11 other demands to the Chief Minister through the District Commissioner.
The Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council has mentioned that he will personally inform the Chief Minister about the issue. Additionally, Terang has stated that this memorandum will also be sent to the Chief Executive Member, the Member of Parliament from the hills, and the five legislators.
