Guwahati : A major terror strike was averted in Assam and national capital Delhi with the apprehension of three suspected extremists in Goalpara district of the state along with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and explosive material.
Goalpara district Additional Superintendent of Police Amitabh Basumatari told reporters here on Monday that based on secret information a special team of Delhi Police had come to the lower Assam district from their headquarters and launched a joint operation with Assam Police and nabbed the three from Goalpara town on Sunday.
The joint team recovered and seized from them a hand made IED, timer and explosives, Basumatari said.
In this connection case number 709/9-10 was registered in Goalpara Sadar police station and the three were produced today in the District Judicial Magistrate’s Court which forwarded them to 12 days police remand, the ASP informed.
Investigations into the issue has been entrusted to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Headquarters.
Asked to which terrorist outfit they belonged to, the police official said only after their interrogation and investigations are completed will it be known as well as what network they have.
Suspecting they had plans to indulge in subversive activities, Basumatari said operations are on in the district and information are being collected.
The three suspected extremists were identified as Liut Jamiul Jaman, 24, Mukkades Islam, 21, both of Village Dhaigaon and Ranjit Ali, 24 of Village Nayapara in Krishnai area, he added.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) of Delhi Police on Monday in the national capital also said it apprehended the three persons from Assam after a joint operation with Police here.
The three were inspired by the ISIS module and were planning a terror strike on Monday at a local carnival ‘Raas’ in Goalpara district, Kushwah said.
They were also planning to conduct terror strikes in heavy footfall areas of Delhi, the officer added.
They were classmates and had also radicalised some people in Delhi, the DCP said, adding that one kilogram of explosive material, a sword and a knife were recovered from their possession.
