
The World Environment Day is led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), this is held every year on 5 June. This day is celebrated across the globe to promote awareness among the masses regarding the environment and also to convey the significance of Dame Nature .
History of the World Environment Day:
World Environment Day was well-established in the year 1972 by the UN General Assembly at the time of the Stockholm Conference. The conference was about Human environment that was held at Stockholm from June 5 to June 16, 1972. The conference was the first and most successful international conference which was held to make environment protection , an important issue. World Environment Day was first celebrated in the year 1974.
This day has created a platform which has raised consciousness regarding the environmental problems that the world is facing like pollution which includes air, water , soil, noise, light pollution etc, global warming, ozone layer depletion, acid rain , natural resource depletion, surplus in the population, deforestation , increment in the sea level and many more .
Significance of World Environment Day:
Our environment is one of the most important aspects to survive on this planet. This is the soul thing that makes life sustainable. This is the high time that necessary initiatives should be taken. As the entire world has been facing the Global Pandemic for the last two years , this has given a better understanding of a healthy, and sustainable environment. The lockdown measures have impacted the environment in a positive manner . The lockdown has let to drop in air pollution across the world . The contingency measures have improved air and water quality.
It is alarming for all of us as a responsible living being to take care of our mother earth and it’s precious resources. The global warming along with the other environmental issues is a very big threat which is challenging us to protect our nature and healthy life. Without a strong environmental laws we will be unable to protect and restore our planet .
Many countries like India , Sweden, Denmark, Gambia , Norway, Rwanda, Costa Rica , Belgium, Singapore, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Finland, Slovenia , Estonia , Switzerland etc. has taken initiatives in transmitting alertness and taking proper measures for protecting the earth from various environmental issues.
As a responsible person it is our foremost duty to look after the usage of every resources, as the environment has become extremely polluted due to presence of toxins and harmful gases , chemicals which is hazardous for our health.
The World Environment Day inspires us to improve the environment we live in and take necessary steps to protect the environment without which life on earth is not imaginable.
Theme of World Environment Day, 2022:
In the year 2022, Sweden is the host of the world environment day. The theme of World Environment Day this year is ‘Only One Earth’. The idea of the theme ‘Only One Earth’ is to focus on the world’s togetherness in the direction for collective transformative action on a global scale to protect and restore the planet. It drew attention to be fact that time is running out to save the planet. ”
We must go from harming the planet to healing it” , UNEP said. The policy of this year’s theme is to create a lifestyle which should be pollution free and full of lush greenery. This planet is our home and we need to save it for our future generations.
Initiatives that can be taken by the people to protect the environment are: Stop the usage of plastic on daily basis , Ride bicycle more , Save water , Do not let harmful chemicals flow to the water bodies, Initiatives must be taken to keep our surroundings clean , Plant a sapling every year, Deforestation should be reduced etc.
