About 1,500 opponents of the Syiem of Hima Langrin, Paiem Nangtei Sing Syiemiong, disrupted a Dorbar (traditional community council) at Phlangdiloin village, roughly 50 km from Mawkyrwat, Meghalaya, on Friday, clashing with security forces and injuring seven police personnel and one civilian. Tear gas was used to disperse the crowd after stone-pelting, police said.
The Dorbar, convened by the recently reinstated Syiem to address allegations against him, had drawn over 2,000 supporters. The opposing group arrived claiming they would participate but allegedly sought to disrupt the proceedings. Police and magistrates initially contained the situation and the meeting continued.
During the session, myntris (council ministers) and the Syiem clarified issues and outlined plans for the Hima. After the Syiem’s speech, the chairman abruptly ended the Dorbar, denying the opponents an opportunity to pose questions. Angered, the group damaged chairs and property and moved toward the stage.
Police moved in to prevent the advance and were met with stone-throwing by the mob. South West Khasi Hills SP B. Jyrwa said officers “showed restraint” while preventing further movement toward the dais. After police action, the group eventually retreated and the situation stabilised.
Seven policemen — one seriously injured — and Benapul Thongni of Phot Umiap village were hurt; all received medical care at Phlangdiloin Health and Wellness Centre. Adequate police personnel remained deployed in the area and officials said the site was under continuous watch.
Syiemiong accused the opponents of seeking personal benefits from Hima resources and condemned the violence, noting that his reinstatement could be legally challenged through the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) or the High Court. Opponent Wadlad Lyngdoh Langrin said the Syiem “was afraid to answer and was running away.” Police said they are awaiting an FIR from the Syiem’s office before taking further legal action.
