Assam Police and the Assam Rifles arrested a husband-and-wife duo and seized a pistol, ammunition and a grenade from a rented house in Tarapur 6th Block near Ramnagar in Silchar, officials said on May 7. The two were taken into custody after a joint overnight raid that followed mobile-phone location tracking, authorities said.

Additional SP (Crime) Rajat Kumar said the suspects were traced through their phone signals before police moved in. “By tracing their mobile locations, we apprehended both of them last night. The operation was jointly conducted by Assam Police and Assam Rifles,” he told reporters.
The arrested have been identified as Laishram Tiken Meitei and Monalisha Chanu, both residents of Churachandpur. Local sources said the couple had been living in the rented accommodation for about one and a half months.
Security teams recovered a 9mm Italian pistol, five live rounds of ammunition and what was described as a Chinese-made grenade from the flat during the search. Authorities said the items are being forensically examined to establish origin and possible links.
The discovery of weapons and an explosive device in a densely populated residential area alarmed neighbours and led to an immediate increase in security presence in the locality, officials added.
Police have launched a detailed probe to determine whether the couple had any connections with banned militant outfits or underground organisations. Both suspects are currently under interrogation as investigators continue to gather evidence.
