A major fire erupted today, November 16, at the Post Office building located near Gate No. 8 in the Bharalumukh area of Maligaon, creating thick smoke and triggering panic among local residents. The blaze reportedly began on the third floor of the structure. Initially suspected to be caused by an electrical short circuit, officials later clarified that the flames spread rapidly following an explosion of a gas cylinder inside the residence. Neighbors mentioned that a small birthday celebration for the couple’s daughter was happening at the time of the incident.

Witnesses described hearing a loud blast shortly after the fire ignited, with dense smoke billowing from the upper floors, prompting several residents to flee their homes as the situation escalated. Fire and Emergency Services dispatched multiple fire tenders to the scene, where firefighters worked diligently to contain the fire. They managed to rescue two individuals trapped inside the building, providing them with initial medical assistance before transporting them to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
The victims have been identified as Deb Choudhury, 47, and Pompi Choudhury, 36. Both suffered severe burn injuries and smoke inhalation, and despite the efforts of medical personnel, the couple unfortunately succumbed to their injuries en route to GMCH.
As investigators assess the damage, authorities have launched an inquiry to determine the precise cause of the fire..
