India celebrated a monumental achievement on Sunday as both its men’s and women’s teams secured their first-ever gold medals at the 45th Chess Olympiad. The men’s team overcame Slovenia in the 11th and final round, with stellar performances from D Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, and R Praggnanadhaa. Meanwhile, the women’s team triumphed over Azerbaijan with a decisive 3.5-0.5 victory.

Previously, the Indian men’s team had earned bronze medals in 2014 and 2022, while the women’s team had also claimed a bronze in the 2022 edition held in Chennai.
This historic win underscores India’s growing prominence in the international chess arena.
