Renowned wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia officially joined the Congress Party at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in Delhi today. Their entry into politics comes as Haryana prepares for its Assembly elections, marking their transition from the wrestling mat to the political arena.
Phogat, who earlier resigned from her position with Indian Railways, announced her move on social media, expressing gratitude for her tenure. “At this juncture in my life, I have decided to separate myself from the railway service and have submitted my resignation to the competent authorities of Indian Railways,” Phogat wrote on X, thanking the Railways for their support.

At the AICC press conference, Phogat spoke emotionally about her decision to join Congress, praising the party’s support during difficult times. She particularly noted Congress’s backing during their protests against former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in 2023, unlike other parties that remained silent. Phogat emphasized her pride in joining a party committed to fighting injustice and advocating for women’s rights.
Bajrang Punia, accompanying Phogat in this political move, also met with former Congress president Rahul Gandhi earlier this week, indicating their commitment to the party’s vision. Both wrestlers have been outspoken supporters of Congress, especially following their protests regarding sexual harassment allegations.
Their political entry is expected to influence Haryana’s upcoming Assembly elections significantly, leveraging their sports fame and public support to make a broader impact.
