In a significant development for Assam’s academic community, Nani Gopal Mahanta, a distinguished academician and seasoned policy advisor, has been appointed the new Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University. Mahanta, renowned for his comprehensive experience and pivotal contributions to academia, previously served as a professor in the Political Science Department at Gauhati University. During his tenure, he held influential positions, including department head and registrar from 2018 to 2019.

A notable alumnus of the esteemed Jawaharlal Nehru University, Mahanta furthered his education as a Rotary World Peace Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, from 2002 to 2004. This fellowship gave him the platform to undertake significant research across Europe and South Asia, enriching his academic and professional perspectives.
Throughout his illustrious career, Mahanta has made a name for himself as a prolific author and insightful commentator on regional and national issues. His contributions to education and public discourse were recognized in 2009 when he received the Education Research and Development Foundation Excellence Award. Mahanta’s expertise has been in demand by various government bodies in Assam, wherein he has provided valuable input to the Department of Education and the Secondary Education Board.
His leadership abilities are evident from his tenure as the president of the governing body at Handique Girls College and as the head of the Northeast India Political Science Association from 2014 to 2018. Born in Sivasagar, Assam, Mahanta comes from a Vaishnavite Satriya family, influencing his deep interest in the region’s cultural traditions.
