The Assam Police initiated a digital Body Mass Index (BMI) test for all police personnel on Wednesday. Director General of Police, GP Singh, was the first to undergo the test. Singh stated that the goal is to improve the health and fitness of the Assam Police, as directed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The DGP, with a BMI of 25, passed the test successfully. The decision to conduct BMI analysis for all serving police personnel was made on May 16, and data for over 67,000 personnel was collected. The BMI exercise is being carried out at 36 locations across the state. In the next phase, police officers classified as obese (BMI above 30) will be advised to attend the Police Training College at Dergaon.
They will receive support from government doctors and nutritionists, and if necessary, will be kept for up to three months to reduce their BMI below 30. Singh further mentioned plans to target a BMI of 28 by next year, as well as create a database of blood sugar and blood pressure levels for police officers. Once the entire database is collected, appropriate medical interventions will be implemented, with the state government providing necessary support.
During a meeting with senior police officials, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed the need to remove “dead wood” from the police force, including habitual drinkers, extremely obese individuals, and those facing corruption charges, in order to transform the force into a more responsive and action-oriented unit.
