In Kota, Rajasthan, a tragic incident unfolded just hours before the national medical entrance exam, when a NEET aspirant allegedly died by suicide. The police reported that the minor hanged herself from an iron grille in her room located in the Parshavnath area. Arvind Bhardwaj, Circle Inspector at the Kunhadi police station, confirmed the age of the girl to be under 18. The student, originally from Sheopur, Madhya Pradesh, had been residing in Kota with her parents for several years, attending a coaching institute to prepare for the NEET-UG exam.

Scheduled to take the exam on Sunday, the young girl tragically ended her life on Saturday evening, reportedly using a scarf. Her family, who were home at the time, discovered her body around 9 PM, according to reports from PTI. The authorities stated that no suicide note was found, and the body was sent for postmortem analysis.
Sadly, this incident marks the 14th student suicide in Kota this year, a city known for its robust coaching industry catering to students aiming for competitive exams like NEET and JEE. Last year, the city witnessed 17 similar cases. The high-pressure environment and relentless competition among students are often scrutinized as contributing factors to the mental health struggles faced by many aspirants.
In recent developments, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued warnings to several coaching centers in Kota. The allegations include violations of advertising norms and engaging in unfair trade practices. Specific attention was drawn to claims of guaranteed admissions and assured ranks, which are perceived as exaggerated and exploitative of student success stories to boost enrollments.
The disturbing trend of student suicides in Kota has raised critical concerns regarding the immense pressure placed on young aspirants in these coaching hubs. The combination of high expectations and the intense preparation required for exams like NEET creates a challenging environment that can put significant emotional and psychological strain on students.
This incident underscores the urgent need for a supportive framework that addresses mental health issues and provides adequate counseling for students. Ensuring a balanced approach to education that encourages mental well-being alongside academic preparation is essential for preventing such tragedies in the future.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on improving the oversight of coaching institutes and creating a healthier academic environment that prioritizes student welfare. This includes potential regulatory changes to ensure that the advertising practices of coaching centers remain fair and transparent.
The city of Kota, and indeed the nation, must come together to address these pressing issues, creating strategies that better support young minds as they navigate the demanding educational landscape.
