The Special Vigilance Cell under the Chief Minister detained former ACS official Sukanya Borah for her alleged role in the Assam MPLAD fraud. Before her arrest, Borah, who worked as the Additional District Commissioner of the Kamrup Metropolitan area, had been questioned several times by investigators about her purported participation in the corrupt activities.

Borah is facing allegations of accumulating assets exceeding her lawful earnings by registering them under the names of her kin. Additionally, it has been reported that her aunt disclosed to the police that the officer under suspension amassed these properties by deceitfully claiming her mother was mentally incapacitated.
It is claimed that Borah has a considerable amount of land in various places including Guwahati, Morigaon, Hajo, and North Guwahati. The ACS official faced suspension in March 2023 on the grounds of potential misconduct in administering initiatives financed by the Members of Parliament Local Area Development (MPLAD) scheme.
In May, the Gauhati High Court turned down Borah’s request for anticipatory bail related to the case. Additionally, retired PWD engineer Samed Ali and Deputy Conservator of Forests Bhaskar Deka were detained in relation to the same investigation. Both individuals, who had previously been called in by the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell for an inquiry, allegedly did not comply with the authorities, which resulted in their apprehension.
The probe found that money from the Member of Parliament Local Area Development (MPLAD) fund of Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan was designated for a road-building initiative in Barpeta, Assam. Despite this, the approval for the payment was granted before three-quarters of the project had been finished.
