T<\/strong><\/span>wo suspected cattle thieves were injured in police firing when they allegedly tried to flee from a checkpoint in Lakhimpur district of Assam, officials said on Thursday.<\/span>
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0According to senior officials, a truck carrying 30 cattle was asked to stop at a checkpoint under the Dholpur outpost of Lakhimpur district on Wednesday night.<\/span>

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Three more suspected cattle smugglers managed to flee from the scene taking advantage of the darkness, he added.<\/span>
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The injured duo have been sent to Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital for treatment.<\/span>
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Altogether 42 people have been killed and at least 104 injured in police action while allegedly trying to flee from custody or attacking the personnel since the BJP government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, assumed office in May 2021.<\/span>
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The rising number of shoot-outs whipped up a political furore with the opposition alleging that the Assam Police has turned “trigger happy” and is indulging in “open killings” under the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led regime.<\/span>
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0On March 28, the Assam Government informed the state Assembly that death or injury to the suspected criminals is “not new” if they try to escape from custody or attack the personnel.<\/span>
