I<\/span>n a harrowing incident in Churaibari, Assam, a truck driver, identified as Abhijit Shabdkar, is in critical condition following a confrontation with police that resulted in a shooting. The incident has raised serious concerns about law enforcement practices and public safety.<\/span><\/p>\n

The confrontation occurred on Saturday night when police sought to interrogate Shabdkar regarding a serious accident that had taken place earlier in Kakavhor. Reports indicate that the police were investigating the driver after he allegedly injured a local police constable, Ujjal Bora, during a reckless attempt to evade a routine check at a police barricade. Bora later succumbed to his injuries, deepening the tragedy surrounding this case.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to eyewitness accounts, the truck driver, upon being signaled to stop, accelerated through the police barricade, leading to a violent encounter. As the police attempted to apprehend him, Shabdkar reportedly made a desperate move to seize a police firearm. In response, law enforcement fired a warning shot into the air, but when Shabdkar continued to flee, police were left with no choice but to shoot him, inflicting severe injuries.<\/span><\/p>\n

Authorities quickly transported him to a nearby medical facility where he is currently receiving urgent care. Shabdkar’s injuries have been characterized as life-threatening, and the situation remains critical.<\/span><\/p>\n

Following the incident, the truck, which was loaded with cartons from Tripura, fled the scene only to lose control and veer off the road in the Fonairband area, resulting in an additional accident involving the pursuing police vehicle. Fortunately, the officer in charge, Bimal Chhetri, sustained only minor injuries during this secondary incident.<\/span><\/p>\n

Police apprehended Shabdkar alongside an accomplice, Khalachi Giyas Uddin, as they investigated the truck further. The vehicle, which had been loaded with used empty cartons, also contained a hidden stash of illicit drugs. A search revealed 20,000 yaba tablets and 10,000 rupees in cash concealed beneath the driver’s seat. The estimated street value of the recovered drugs is approximately 5 crore rupees, prompting further inquiries into the truck’s intended destination and the broader implications of drug trafficking in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n
