I<\/span>n its first initiative, the Assam Women Journalists\u2019 Forum (AWJF) partnered with Gauhati University<\/a>\u2019s Department of Communication and Journalism to conduct a training session on \u2018Reporting Climate Change and Gender\u2019 on Thursday, September 19.<\/span><\/p>\n In recent years, it has been observed that climate change has wreaked havoc across various regions of the country. The North East, especially Assam, is particularly susceptible to the destructive effects of changing climate and weather patterns. Floods and earthquakes occur frequently, significantly affecting people’s lives and livelihoods. During the session, resource persons, all members of the AWJF, emphasized that reporting on climate change and gender issues requires specific skills and knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n Dr. Bharati Bharali, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication and Journalism, greeted the guest speakers and praised the effort undertaken by AWJF. She also highlighted the department’s recent initiatives. Durba Ghosh, the AWJF president and PTI Bureau Chief, started with an introductory statement about the newly-established AWJF, emphasizing that despite the passage of many years, “we still lack a female editor in mainstream media in Assam.”<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe want that to change, hopefully, in the next 10 years\u201d, she added. <\/span> Mubina Akhtar threw light on how climate change poses a threat to Assam\u2019s heritage thread, Muga and the positive impact of her reportage on the issue. <\/span> The session is a step by AWJF towards bridging the gap between the classroom and the news room so that students are better skilled to deal effectively with challenges of modern journalism. <\/span><\/p>\n The resource persons of the training session included award-winning journalists who have reported extensively over the years on North East\u2019s biodiversity, environment, wildlife, climate change and gender issues. \nThe resource persons talked about local communities who are bearing the brunt of climate change and also how they are adapting to it. <\/span>
\nSenior journalists Mubina Akhtar and Ratna Bharali highlighted some of their landmark stories to provide a context to the way climate change has affected livelihood and living in this part of the world. <\/span><\/p>\n
\nRatna Bharali drew on recent examples of displacement and labour to help understand how climate change is impacting livelihood in rural areas. <\/span>
\nShe emphasized that women do not often have access to local resources; however, women also have better adaptation strategies. Samim Sultana, vice president, AWJF, spoke about pay parity and the fact that women are still not getting \u2018equal pay for equal work\u2019; she also spoke about making gender-sensitive reporting a priority in newsrooms. <\/span>
\nAngana Chakraborty, independent journalist, spoke about the \u2018inequality of heat\u2019: how climate change disproportionately affects women from the most vulnerable communities and how they respond to it; she used two articles to highlight the different ways of covering the gendered impact of climate change \u2014 in a rural and in an urban setting. Chandrani Sinha, another independent journalist, spoke about taking local stories to a global platform and about climate preparedness and resilience; she also highlighted how political instability can impact climate financing\u2014citing the case of Bangladesh.<\/span><\/p>\n
\nAssam Women Journalists\u2019 Forum (AWJF) is a network of women media persons working in the state to provide a platform for their professional growth as well as mentor and skill new entrants to the media industry. <\/span><\/p>\n
