Assam’s Sivasagar has been chosen by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, under the Challenge-Based Destination Development (CBDD) initiative of the Swadesh Darshan scheme. This historic town is one of 42 select destinations across the country, classified under the Eco-Tourism & Amrit Dharohar Site category, aimed at enhancing tourism infrastructure and sustainable development. Sivasagar will benefit from the CBDD’s focus on infrastructure development and soft interventions to improve visitor experiences.
The scheme’s four key tourism segments include Spiritual Tourism, Culture & Heritage, Vibrant Village Program, and Eco-Tourism & Amrit Dharohar Sites. To facilitate development, the Ministry of Tourism has provided a template for State Governments and UT Administrations to formulate detailed action plans and project proposals, which are evaluated based on specific parameters and guidelines before receiving final approval and funding. This transparent process ensures that destinations receive the necessary support to enhance their tourism potential.

Northeast India has also been well-represented under the CBDD, with several destinations selected under different categories. Other notable inclusions from the region include Kibitho in Arunachal Pradesh, Langthabal Konug in Manipur, Nartiang Village and Mawphlang Village in Meghalaya, Impur Village in Nagaland, and Gnathang Village and Kabi in Sikkim.
As part of the Swadesh Darshan scheme, these destinations will receive a boost in terms of infrastructure development, soft interventions, and visitor experiences. The CBDD’s emphasis on sustainable development is crucial, as it will help preserve the region’s rich cultural heritage while allowing tourists to appreciate the natural beauty and unique attractions on offer. With Sivasagar’s selection, Assam is poised to benefit from theCBDD’s initiatives, which will undoubtedly attract more tourists to this historic town.
