In a major crackdown on the illegal drug trade, police in Assam’s Goalpara district have eradicated poppy cultivation spanning 170 bighas in the char areas, delivering a significant blow to narcotics operations worth an estimated ₹27.20 crore.

The operation was executed in the Sitalmari Char area under the Chunari Police Station. Leading the initiative were the ASP (HQ) of Goalpara and the Officer-in-Charge of Lakhipur Police Station, with oversight from the Circle Officer of Lakhipur, the Excise Inspector, and other officials.
In a sharp rebuke to the cultivators, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media, labeling them as “Local Pablo Escobars” and sarcastically stating, “Sorry to spoil your planned Udta Assam party!” He further cautioned traffickers, emphasizing, “Next time you think of drugs, think of Assam Police first.”
This decisive action reaffirms Assam Police’s commitment to combating the drug menace and serves as a stern warning to those involved in illicit activities.
