On January 20, the district administration of Kokrajhar, Assam, took decisive action against the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Medical & Paramedical Institute, sealing the facility for operating without necessary permissions and regulatory approvals. This enforcement was spearheaded by Executive Magistrate Dhrubajyoti Das, with support from the Kokrajhar Police Station, marking a significant move in Assam’s comprehensive statewide crackdown on illegal and unrecognized health science institutions.

The closure underscores the government’s firm stance against educational institutions that mislead students by offering illegitimate degrees and diplomas in various health sciences fields. According to government regulations, any institution offering education or training in disciplines such as pharmacy, nursing, physiotherapy, and laboratory technology must secure appropriate permissions from the Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences (SSUHS). Additionally, a recent mandate, Notification No. MER 307386/2 dated June 6, 2023, dictates that even private universities and institutions require affiliation with SSUHS to legally operate within Assam.
The Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Medical and Paramedical Institute’s failure to obtain these crucial approvals and affiliations led to the administrative action. This initiative reflects the state’s commitment to maintaining educational integrity and safeguarding students from fraudulent educational entities. The enforcement serves as a stern warning to other institutions that may be operating illegally, emphasizing the necessity for compliance with educational standards and legal requirements.
This crackdown aligns with Assam’s ongoing efforts to ensure quality education and protect students from falling prey to unauthorized institutions. It highlights the crucial role of regulatory bodies in upholding educational standards and affirms the government’s dedication to nurturing a legitimate and transparent educational environment.
